A VGA adapter is a component that has a male side and a female side that allows for graphics to be presented on a screen. VGA which stands for video graphics array is a method in which information is presented on a screen. Currently, it is the "lowest common denominator" when it comes to the type of graphics that a computer will have. The base is VGA and then any components added supercede the VGA.

History of VGA

In 1987, IBM unveiled the display hardware known as VGA. It was installed in their IBM PS/2 line of computers. While the PC only had marginal success and soon failed to provide a large market for IBM, VGA went on to become universal for many different PC creators. While its actual meaning was video graphics array, it has gained some recognition as a video graphics adapter because many of the different types of adapters are VGA compatible.VGA Adapter

While it still remains used in most computers, newer types of VGA have appeared that make it even more obsolete. Officially, it was superseded by the XGA which was made by IBM. However, other companies began creating their own types of VGA and therefore, it was superseded long before IBM's updated version was released.

VGA Adapters

A VGA adapter is a component that allows for the transfer of the display. When looking at a computer monitor, the plug that goes into the back of the tower is the male side of a VGA adapter. It plugs into the female side and, once the monitor is plugged into an outlet, it can be used. However, in recent years, monitors have begun to have a power outlet installed with the VGA; therefore, it cuts back on the amount of cables required.

As time has gone on, fewer and fewer people are using VGA adapters. They are, instead, trying to convert their VGA to HDMI or they are using a DVI. This allows for multiple different types of data to be transferred. It is compatible with some HDMI, some DVI-D and, when in analog mode, VGA. Therefore, many people use DVI on their monitors because it can transmit all different types of imaging.
