Potassium is a mineral that is found naturally in many foods. It is one of the most important minerals as it helps the body to carry out many different functions, the most important being its use in the beating of the human heart.

In some cases, it is difficult for people to get enough potassium in their body. For example, there are some diseases that result in low potassium levels. If an individual has been vomiting for some time, his/her potassium levels may decrease. There are also some medicines that inhibit potassium absorption. Regardless, low potassium blood levels (hypokalemia) are very dangerous to the body.

Therefore, potassium gluconate was created to help people to get the necessary potassium. It is used to prevent and treat hypokalemia. Potassium is combined with gluconic acid (which forms the gluconate ion) because it makes it much easier for the body to absorb the drug. There are quite a few drugs (in the form of gluconates) that are injected into the body.

When not to Use Potassium Gluconate

If the user has any of the following diseases or ailments, it is not advised that potassium gluconate be used. Moreover, consulting one’s medical provider before taking medication is always advised. Here is the list:

·Kidney failure

·UTI

·Diabetes that is not controlled

·Peptic ulcer in the stomach

·Addison’s disease

·Severe burns

·Dehydration

·High potassium levels

When taking it, it is important to swallow the pill with a minimum of 8 ounces of water. Potassium Gluconate can irritate the mouth and throat if it is not coated with enough water. Therefore, drink a lot of water after ingesting this mineral.
