A DSL modem is a device that is used to connect a computer to a DSL phone line. It is a type of transceiver whose purpose it is to both transmit information as well as receive information. In other words, it is the central hub of the Internet in an individual's home.

Typically, a DSL connection can provide the user with the ability to transmit information from anywhere between hundreds of kilobites per second up to many megabites per second. On top of that, the frequencies for a DSL connection are from 25kHz up to 1mHz which is to ensure that there is no interference to the voice service.

What is DSL?

DSL stands for digital subscriber line. This family of technology provides data transmission through the wiring of local telephone networks. Therefore, a DSL connection is connected to the phone line. However, unlike dial up which would block out the original phone line, DSL doesn't do this because it is a separate connection that takes place at the phone company. Therefore, an individual can receive phone calls as well as use their Internet at the exact same time.

Setting Up a DSL Modem

Setting up a DSL Modem requires only the box that the modem comes in, the installation software and then an agreement with the phone company. Once the phone company has set up DSL for that house, the individual can hook the modem up and immediately begin using the much faster Internet.

The first thing to do is put the modem in a place where it will transmit the most data around the house. This is typically closest to where most of the computers are used. Using the cable that was provided, connect the phone line to the modem. Each modem is different; therefore, the instructions will explain which insert is the right one.

Following this, plug it into the wall. Now that the modem is on, put the installation CD into the computer and install it. This will allow the consumer to set the DSL up to ensure that it is protected. Finally, set up a password and username so that others cannot gain access to the Internet.

Finally, move around the house and make sure that it is transmitting properly. The DSL modem will connect with one's wireless card and the Internet should become usable almost immediately after hooking it up.
