Personal RFID tracking units are personal tracking units that depend on RFID or Radio Frequency Identification technology. Personal RFID tracking units allow users to identify and locate objects and individuals within a specific facility or area. Although personal RFID tracking units are not as popular or as common as other forms of personal tracking units and are rarely integrated into other devices such as GPS, they can be used for many of the same purposes. While personal RFID tracking units can be used in a wide range of applications, they are most commonly used for tracking, loss prevention, and identification.

Tracking

Personal RFID tracking units can be used to track items and individuals within a household or facility and can be used to locate missing objects. For example, a user who has one or two RFID readers installed in his/her home can place RFID tags on commonly misplaced objects such as key chains, cell phones, and even clothing, and use a personal RFID tracking unit to find the missing object’s exact location on demand.

Loss Prevention

Like tracking, personal RFID tracking units can be used for loss prevention in order to alert the user if an item is taken outside of a specific area. For example, if a user installs one or two RFID readers in his/her home, he/she can place RFID tags on valuable objects such as rings, wallets, or electronics and be alerted when the object leaves the house. However, because RFID technology is limited to several hundred feet, the user will not be able to locate the stolen object once it has left the RFID reader’s range.

Identification

In addition to tracking and loss prevention, personal RFID tracking units can be used for identification purposes in order to prevent unauthorized personnel from entering a restricted area. For example, a user who has installed one or two RFID readers in his/her doorway can wear an RFID tag in order to enter the house without sounding an alarm. However, if someone enters the doorway without an RFID tag, the alarm will sound and may contact law enforcement.
