Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) is also known as butanone. It is a colorless liquid and has a sweet, sharp odor that smells similar to butterscotch and acetone mixed together. The compound is organic, but must be produced industrially. The substance rarely occurs naturally. Methyl ethyl ketone is primarily used as a solvent in nature.

How is Methyl Ethyl Ketone Produced?

The primary way to produce methyl ethyl ketone in industry is to oxidize 2-butanol using a catalyst based from bronze, zinc, or copper. Another way to produce the substance is via bio-synthesis by some trees and vegetables. However, no alternative method can make enough of the substance as cost effectively as the oxidation of 2-butanol.Methyl Ethyl Ketone

What Are the Uses of Methyl Ethyl Ketone?

Methyl ethyl ketone is primarily used as a solvent in various processes that use resins, cellulose acetate, gums, and nitrocellulose coatings in vinyl film. As a result, it is used in the production of paraffin wax, textiles, plastics, varnishes, lacquers, paint remover, and as a denaturing agent in glues, cleaning agents, and alcohol. The substance has most recently been used in the dye in dry erase markers.

What Are the Health Impacts of Methyl Ethyl Ketone?

Methyl ethyl ketone is considered to be an irritant to humans, but has not been observed to have serious health risks in laboratory testing. Some studies have shown that when the substance is inhaled, it may increase the risk of birth defects. Since methyl ethyl ketone is an irritant, if it is inhaled the person exposed should be removed to fresh air and given artificial respiration if unconscious. If ingested, the person may vomit but it should not be induced. If the person is vomiting, their head should be kept beneath the hips to prevent lung aspiration. If skin exposure occurs, then the exposed area should be flushed for 15 minutes and the contaminated clothing removed. If it gets into the eyes, they should be flushed for a minimum of 15 minutes. In all cases, anyone exposed to the substance should get medical attention immediately.
