Microsoft Word comes with a large collection of fonts that can be used for word processing. However, there are times when other fonts are wanted. To get these requires downloading different fonts from the Internet. Some of these are free, but there are premium fonts that can be quite expensive. Typically, a free font can handle most of the things an individual wants to do.

Adding New Fonts

The very first step is to find the font that you want to use. There are many different sites on the web to find fonts. A simple Google search of "free fonts" brings up thousands of pages. 1001 Free Fonts, though, is a great site for free fonts. Browse through the list of different fonts until you find the one that fits your needs. Click the download button–whether it is for Apple or Windows–and then save it to a new folder specifically for fonts.

Once the installation is done, open the font so that you can see the different files that are within the font folder. However, they zipped, so be sure to unzip them to gain access to the files. These are going to be necessary when adding the fonts to the computer to be recognized. The reason this is important is because the printer won't be able to print the fonts because the software won't recognize it until it has been added to the computer.

Go to the control panel via the start menu and then click the fonts tab. This has a list of all of the fonts that are currently installed on the computer. Open the newly downloaded font and drag the font into the folder. Allow it to copy over. This process takes about five seconds at most depending on the size of the font and the number of fonts being transferred over at one time.

Open up Microsoft Word and the font will appear in the list of fonts. More importantly, the font will be recognized by the printer so that it can print the document. Otherwise, if the font is used, the printer won't be able to add all the finite details because it doesn't have the font file to read off.
