One of the great things about the Sony PSP is that you can surf the Internet on it and play music. When playing games, it helps to have your own music rather than the stock music that comes with the game. Therefore, by taking the music that you have on your computer–so long as it is in MP3 PSP format–you can load it onto the PSP and use the hand held as both a game console as well as a small musical electronic device.

Adding Music to a PSP

With the memory stick inside the PSP, connect the device to the computer with the USB. Then turn on the device. Typically, the computer will alert you that there is a new piece of hardware connected to the computer. Make sure that the device is properly connected by opening the computer tab on your start menu and locating the folder within there that isn’t a C or D. This is how you know you’ve connected the PSP to the computer properly.

Locate the folder “PSP” on the memory stick by double clicking on the stick in the computer tab. This is where all the files are going to go. However, you can’t drag and drop the files there. You have to have a folder within the folder to handle everything. So, create a new folder called “music.” Then, drag and drop all the songs that you want on the PSP into this folder. If the songs are not in MP3 format, reformat them so that they are. The PSP will not be able to play another format. This becomes difficult if you have iTunes on the computer because songs from iTunes come in a different format.

Once the music folder is filled with the music you want, drag that folder over into the PSP folder and then close it down. Safely remove the USB device by stopping the flow of power to and from it and then unplug it. Put the USB to the side and then play a song. If it plays, you’ve put music on successfully. If it doesn’t, there might be something wrong with the folder you made or the individual memory stick. Try again.
