What is VPN Software?

VPN software refers to any program that assists the user in creating a Virtual Private Network or accesses a remote location. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a type of private connection that uses the Internet to securely transfer data from one computer to another. Generally, VPNs involve a server (main database) and the user's computer (client). VPN software facilitates the use of VPNs by providing the user with encryption, user verification, and other tools that make VPNs easier to manage.

OpenVPN

OpenVPN is a free, open source VPN software that is able to run on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS X, Linux, mobile devices, and virtual machines. OpenVPN can be used to run between 10 and several hundred-thousand VPN connections simultaneously, perform client scanning, and receive updates from the server. It has several mode options, including the ability to connect a client to a server in a single VPN or the ability to connect multiple VPN networks together so that one server can access all other servers within the network.Free VPN Software

CyberGhost

CyberGhost is a free VPN software that allows the user to access the Internet through a VPN. CyberGhost is ideal for users who wish to avoid malware, spyware, and information gathering tactics used by many websites and large companies. CyberGhost has a built-in web browser that serves as a permanent proxy server for its users. By accessing the Internet through CyberGhost rather than the user's own web browser, VPN masks the user and data thieves cannot see the user's true IP address. CyberGhost can run on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7, and uses 128-bit SSL encryption.

UltraVPN

UltraVPN is another free VPN software that is based on OpenVPN. UltraVPN is designed to hide the user's IP address and provide users from all over the world with a way to access the Internet without being blocked, tracked, or targeted by malicious software. For example, many countries require that ISPs block specific websites from their citizens. By using a VPN software such as UltraVPN, users can once again view the Internet uncensored. UltraVPN includes options for setting up specific proxy settings but is also able to configure them automatically. UltraVPN runs on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

SecurityKiss
SecurityKiss is a free VPN software that allows users to securely and anonymously transfer data from a client to a server or from a server to a client. While SecurityKiss is available in three commercial versions, there is a free version with a 50-300 MB/day limit. SecurityKiss hides the user's IP address, encrypts all of the data that the user transfers, compresses the user's bandwidth traffic for higher transfer rates, and allows users to access sites and applications that have been blocked by their ISP or network administrator.

LogMeIn Hamachi
LogMeIn Hamachi is a VPN software that is available in a free version for up to 16 different clients. LogMeIn Hamachi can be easily setup in minutes and does not require any configuration from the user. LogMeIn Hamachi is entirely browser-based, which allows clients to connect to other clients and servers at any time and from anywhere in the world. Users simply need to download the LogMeIn Hamachi software, run the installation wizard, setup a VPN, and connect to it to immediately start transferring files and accessing applications over the VPN.
